How to scan a QR code on Android

Plain-English answerBy the Simply QR Codes team

Every Android phone from the last six years scans QR codes without installing anything. The method varies slightly by brand — here is each one, plus the fixes when nothing happens.

The standard way: the camera

Open the Camera app, point it at the code (fill about a third of the frame), hold steady for a second. A link banner or chip appears — tap it. This works natively on Android 9+ on Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus and most others.

Samsung specifics

Galaxy phones scan in the Camera app directly. If yours doesn't: swipe down the quick settings and tap the Scan QR code tile — it opens a dedicated scanner. (Settings → Camera → "Scan QR codes" must be on.)

If the camera does nothing: Google Lens

Lens reads any code on any Android. Open the camera and tap the Lens icon, or long-press the home button → Lens, or open the Google app and tap the camera in the search bar. Point, tap the result.

From a screenshot or photo

Open the image in Google Photos → tap the Lens icon at the bottom → tap the link. Or upload the image to our picture scanner — decoded in your browser, nothing uploaded.

A code shown on your own screen

You cannot point a camera at its own display. Screenshot it, then use the Google Photos + Lens route above.

When scanning still fails

Clean the lens, add light, move closer, hold still. If other codes scan and this one does not, the code itself is the problem — contrast, size or a dead link: run through QR code not scanning. You can also test it in our online scanner to see exactly what it decodes to.

Quick answers

Does Android have a built-in QR scanner?

Yes — the camera app scans natively on Android 9 and later, and Google Lens covers every other case. No third-party app needed.

How do I scan a QR code on Android without an app?

Open the camera, point at the code, tap the banner. If your camera lacks the feature, Google Lens is already on your phone inside the Google app.

How do I scan a QR code from a picture on Android?

Open the picture in Google Photos and tap the Lens icon — or upload it to our in-browser picture scanner.

Why won't my Android phone scan QR codes?

Usually the "Scan QR codes" camera setting is off, the code is too small or dim, or the code itself is defective. Lens almost always succeeds where the camera fails.
